Calling All Readers.  Please help me to build the largest resource of FREE tutu materials and instruction materials there exists.  Parents of dancers, who pay for dance lessons and all the associated costs are often without resources for expensive patterns and instruction books.  I am asking you to help me build a site of free information for readers. I agree with Creative Commons: Information Wants to BE FREE.

Please contact me if you can share your patterns, your tips, your instructions. I need your best resources for fabrics, trims and materials. Put a STOP to overpriced second rate instructions. I offer this site with no advertisement.  Your help too stop over priced -- under valued sale of tutu construction information would be appreciated.

Free Bodice Pattern

Here is my method for a perfect bodice everytime -- Plus -- It's Free!!! (See Free Bodice Pattern on this website.)

Fitting a perfect bodice is never easy but it starts with a perfect pattern. My dancer daughter never stayed the same size for long.

I was always able to make the perfect bodice by using duct tape. She would put on a discardable lightweight t-shirt and we would wrap her in duct tape.

I make one cut down the back to remove the duct tape bodice and then begin to carefully cut my bodice pattern. This sounds easy. However, it is best to mark a straight line down the center back and the center sides while still on the mannequin or dancer.

Whether you are cutting a one piece tutu or a two piece tutu with a separate bodice this technique will save you time AND money. Purchasing a role of duct tape is less expensive than purchasing a pattern ... which must be adjusted anyway!

Link to my Goth Tutu for detailed instructions on making a duct tape bodice to serve as your 'perfect' pattern: http://tututoday.com/no-sew-tutu/goth-fairy-tutu

However, you really only need ONE layer of duct tape for a pattern and you do NOT need the boning we used from a drinking straw.  See a wrapped mannequin below and the duct tape bodice cut into pattern pieces.

This post shows you how to make a duct tape bodice. Cut the bodice off and carefully cut your pattern.

Your first cut should be down the center front.  Then cut the two side seams.

This is also the perfect method to make a one piece basque for a romantic tutu or for a two piece tutu.

With Spring Ballet Season upon us it is great time to examine Paula's exquisite work.

  1. Hi we are looking for help on embellishing a light pink tutu by ourselves for sugar plum fairy. Any suggestions for websites with materials and/or appliques?

  2. This is absolute genius! When I first started tutu making (over 10 years ago now) I wrapped myself in paper and then drew lines on it for the most flattering seam lines - but this is much better! Of course, I couldn't have done it this way on myself, because i couldn't cut myself out, but for a Mum and daughter it's perfect.

  3. I was so pleased to find this. I wanted to let my students experience the FULL production without paying hundreds of dollars on these exquisite pieces of art. THIS will make it so much easier for me to sew 17 costumes in the next 8 weeks (with two jobs)! :-) THANK YOU.
